At the Poetry Center, students read and sequence a variety of poems. At least one poem is written on sentence strips so that tudents can put the sentence strips in order in the pocket chart. Students may copy the poem into their Notebook. They can choose a poetry task card and complete the task in their Notebook.
I use poems from the Poem of the Week series. These books contain poems that are relevant, lively, touching, and thematically appropriate. Each book in the series has at least one poem for each week of school, including curriculum-related poems for math, science, social studies. Each poem highlights a particular grammatical rule, phonogram, blend, diagraph, or phoneme. The suggestions that accompany each poem ensure that you can enjoy the poetry with your students, while at the same time introducing, teaching, or reviewing relevant grammar skills.
