Ghostly Cups
Sometimes 1 + 1 does not equal 2.
What you need:
- water
- rubbing alcohol
- 1-cup measuring cup
- 2-cup measuring cup
What do you do?
- Measure out one cup of tap water. Pour the water into the 2-cup measuring cup.
- Measure out one cup of rubbing alcohol. Measure very carefully. You must have exactly 1 cup of water and 1 cup of rubbing alcohol.
- Pour the rubbing alcohol into the 2-cup measuring cup on top of the water.
- Check your liquid. Is it 2 cups, or is it less than 2 cups?
How does it work?
Water is full of holes. The holes are caused because the water molecules are moving all of the time and leaving spaces in between each molecule.
Rubbing alcohol molecules filled the invisible holes between the water molecules.
The shape of the rubbing alcohol molecules let them fit right in between the water molecules, thus taking up less space!
