Social Studies

Third grade social studies is exciting! We will start the year learning about our nation's Constitution and government. Our next unit covers map and globe skills and landforms. Most of the year is spent learning about the five regions of the United States. Then we will learn about our country's neighbors, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. We end the year with a unit on economics.

We have a social studies textbook, but we will only use it for the first part of the year. The rest of the year, we will be making a notebook with information about the five regions, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Social Studies grades will be based on weekly assessments, tests, projects, participation, and class work. During our study of each region, students will be expected to label the 11 or 12 states of that region on a map as part of their test grade. Although we prepare for this test in class, your Rocket will probably need to spend some time at home practicing recognizing the shapes and locations of the states in the current region. Your child will have a study guide to help practice.
